Telling the Truth

May 27, 2009

Telling The Truth:The Gospel As Tragedy, Comedy & Fairy Tale by Fredrick Buechner is word candy at its best! The short work weighing in at less than 100 pages was originaly a series of lectures on preaching, which must have been a treat to listen to. Buechner is a word smith of the highest order, all of us who communicate publicly should read a book or two of his every year just to be refreshed on the power and beauty of well crafted language. Severial themes weave thier way through the book including the real life failings of Henry Ward Beecher’s personal life,Shakespere’s King Lear and the Wizard of Oz. At times it is possible to get so caught up in the swirling joy of the language it is necessary to retrace the line of thought in the paragraph but it is always worth it.
