Charles Williams Master of the Metaphysical Thriller

October 19, 2009

I just finished rereading War In Heaven (1930) by Charles Williams. As a member of the literary movement The Inklings Williams’s work has been overshadowed by more famous members C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien but within the field of spiritual thrillers William’s takes a backseat to no one. The book involves themes of the detective story, the Holy Grail, King Author and involves in my mind the greatest opening line since “It was a dark and stormy night.” If you are looking for a book to satisfy your tast for romance, satire and the supernatural, pick up any of Charles Williams fiction and be in for a treat.
