The “Holy Grail” of Youth Ministry Citations

September 22, 2010

It would be impossible to count the number of conversations I have had about youth ministry over the years where I have heard quoted ” The average youth pastor stays in a church only 18 months” either to prove a point or to begin a diatribe against “made up ” statistics in ministry circles. For years the buzz was that a citation for this could never be produced……..until today (not really) đŸ™‚ In the book What every Pastor Needs to Know about: Music, Youth and Education, a volume in the Leadership Library published by CTI and Word, 1986 authored by Garth Bolinder, Tom McKee and John R. Cionca, on p.70-71 in Chapter six by Tom McKee we read ” Larger churches wonder how to find and keep a good youth pastor. The average stay is only 18 months”. This is followed by a reference to an article by Paul Borthwick in the Winter 1983 edition of Leadership P.75.
So agree or disagree the mystery of where the longevity stat came from is solved.
