Connect:Real Relationships In A World of Isolation

September 23, 2010

Connect by Jonathan Mckee is by far the most practical youth ministry book I have ever read! It takes the reader step-by-step through the process of talking with and relating to the six general types of students often encountered in student ministry. Signifigant time is spent discussing both the reasons for, warnings about and instructions in order to carry out successful one-on-one meetings with students. It is almost as if the book was designed to be used as a training tool/curriculum for youth ministry staffs. Having served in youth ministry 30 years every page was filled with a mental image of a past conversation with a student very much like Jonathan describes. The appendices are helpful especially the sample study of Jesus’ Encounters with people and Volunteer Expectations. Dr. Dave Rahn says,”Connect needs to be in the hands of everyone who works with kids” I don’t disagree, especially if they are getting started in developing the skill sets surrounding contact work with students.
