A.W. Tozer: Man Who Met God

July 15, 2011

It says something about the timelessness of a preachers work to have sermon tapes of thier preaching still being discovered and turned into books 25 years after thier death. Such is the case with A.W. Tozers “new” book Men Who Met God. The tapes were made available from Bayview Glen Church in Toronto Canada where Tozer last pastored before his death in 1963. This series is collection of 7 messages based on character studies of Old Testament heroes of the faith including Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Elijah, Isaiah and Ezekiel. As is often the case decades old sermons do not wearwell because they are preached to a specific group of people at a specific place for a specific time and through the first 3/4 of the book my preception of the books value was mainly historical until the chapter on Isaiah. I like most sermon listeners have encountered Isaiah so many times one wonders if anything new or fresh can be brought to the applicational forefront, the answer is a resounding YES! Tozer tites the sermon “I Have Seen Another World” and then helps the reader to experience a fleeting glimpse of that concept themselves. It was in reading this sermon that one is reminded why Tozer has been read and will continue to be read for centuries to come. If you enjoy reading sermons, or are doing a study of Isaiah this would be a valuable book for your library.
