The Wisdom of Narnia

March 11, 2012

The Wisdom of Narnia (Harper Collins, 2001, Illustrated by Pauline Baynes) is catagorized as a gift book- small in size, square in shape, and short on pages. Ordinarily I would not review a book like this as it would not have specific ministry context in mind. However this small book contains most of the great quotes contained in the 7 volumes of the Chronicles of Narnia that as a speaker I am regularly trying to remember exactly where the quote I am thinking about is and the exact wording. More complete and exhaustive Lewis quote books exist but having to wade through extended quotations from the “Abolition Of Man” to find a Nnarnia quote on education can be daunting. The book did miss my favorite quote from the “Silver Chair” from Puddleglum the Marshwiggle but included Aslan’s great thought from the “Magician’s Nephew”, “The witch has won her heart’s desire; she has unwearying strength and endless days like a goddess. But length of days with an evil heart is only length of misery and already she begins to know it. All get what they want; they do not always like it” If you use lots of quotes from the land of Narnia this book would be worth tracking down.
