An Onramp to a Ministry Orientation Toward Understanding Deconstruction

January 12, 2024

There are few topics more discussed in the ministry world today than faith deconstruction. Having had the privilege of hearing A.J. Swoboda address the Society of Professors of Christin Education this fall on this topic I immediately bought and read his book on deconstruction titled, AFTER DOUBT: How To Question Your Faith Without Losing It (2021, Brazos Press). I was not disappointed!

Swoboda combines a rich background in pastoral ministry experience in the Portland Or. area with his work and expertise teaching theology at the undergraduate level. This seamless interaction between personal narrative and research produces both substance, readability and warmth.

The book is divided into two main sections. The first titled, Deconstruction and Doubt spans the first 58 pages of the book and examines causes, statistics, examples and the theological journey of life as whole to provide needed context. The second section covering 8 chapters and over 160 pages is Following Jesus Through Deconstruction and Doubt. Important theological concepts like “discernment” in chapter 9 and cultivating a robust ecclesiology in chapter 5 set a firm foundation for exploring the role of emotions, crisis and transitions as well as how to practice being wrong.

“Faith is a gift; beliefs are not. Forming beliefs takes time and often hard work. Distinguishing faith from beliefs is critical”  (p.20)

“God is seen by those who seek Him. That’s how we begin the journey of reconstruction -of honestly seeking Jesus right where we are as we are” (p.180)

This is a book I have used to prepare teaching presentations for ministry leaders on the subject of ministry to those experiencing deconstruction. It was helpful looking back to put language to parts of my own theological journey and process of individuation. I will also be giving the book to those who seek guidance dealing with the issues surrounding wrestling with faith in their personal lives. In short, it is a wonderful tool for a variety of ministry leadership situations. After finishing this book and being so impressed I went and ordered several more book by Swoboda. I hope and pray they will be even partially as good as this one. Buy and read this book!
